ThermiVa® is a quick, non-invasive, non-ablative treatment delivering physician-controlled radiofrequency energy using a thoughtfully designed handpiece to gently heat tissue. Gently and safely heating the vaginal tissue stimulates collagen with helps with making skin firm and elasticity. The procedure is quick and comfortable. ThermiVa will tighten the vaginal wall, reduce incontinence or urinary leaks, and help restore normal vaginal wall moisture again.

As a woman ages or after childbirth, their vagina can start to lose its firmness and elasticity which can lead to a variety of issues including sexual dissatisfaction, the inability to be aroused, and even urinary incontinence. And although Kegel exercises can help strengthen the vaginal wall, they usually aren’t enough on their own to make a big difference. Luckily, with vaginal rejuvenation or a vaginoplasty, female patients can experience great results and benefits.

What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

There are a variety of different vaginal rejuvenation procedures including creams, injections, surgeries, and laser. Depending on you and the results that you are going for, we will help choose the best vaginal rejuvenation procedure for you.

Who Benefits from Vaginal Rejuvenation?

pexels andrea piacquadio 712413Any woman who is self-conscious about the appearance of her vagina, has a hard time being sexually aroused, is unable to get an orgasm, or who suffers from urinary incontinence may be considered a good candidate for vaginal rejuvenation.

Am I too old for vaginal rejuvenation?

There is not any upper limit on the age a person can be to benefit from vaginal rejuvenation with ThermiVa®.

How does surgical vaginal rejuvenation compare to non-surgical rejuvenation?

pexels john diez 7578233There are two vaginal rejuvenation surgeries. Vaginoplasty is meant to tighten up loose inner vaginal tissues. Labiaplasty excises some of the labia, the lips surrounding the vagina. Both procedures come with significant risk. These include permanent changes in sensation, ongoing pain, scarring, and infection. Because these surgeries are not commonly performed, there is little tracking or evaluation from medical journals.

Compare that with the non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation of ThermiVa®. ThermiVa® is completely non-invasive. Because ThermiVa® uses radiofrequency energy to initiate tissue tightening through the remodeling of existing collagen and the production of new collagen, there isn’t any of the risk involved with surgical feminine rejuvenation. Radiofrequency energy has been used for decades and is always around us without any adverse reactions.

Even without side effects, surgical feminine vaginal rejuvenation involves a lengthy recovery with significant pain. There isn’t any recovery after a ThermiVa® treatment.

How does ThermiVa work?

When radiofrequency energy is delivered onto human skin, it penetrates the epidermis down into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. There the RF energy converts to heat. In the dermis, the presence of heat causes a cellular response in the dermal collagen. The collagen immediately remodels, as the molecules contract and tighten. Next, fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen, are stimulated to create new collagen. This is basically a “wound response,” where the body thinks it has been wounded. This response is to trigger an increase in collagen production at the “wound” location to heal the injury. Since collagen is the protein in the skin responsible for the skin’s overall support structure, the result is firmer, tighter skin.

As it does with skin all over the body, radiofrequency energy applied to the tissue and mucosa both inside and outside the vagina causes the same remodeling, tightening reaction. Plus, new collagen production is triggered, which further tightens these tissues for months afterwards.

Beyond skin tightening, there is evidence that some patients may also experience an increase in clitoral sensitivity and the ability to attain orgasm after ThermiVa® treatments. This benefit does vary with different patients.

Is ThermiVa treatment painful?

The ThermiVa® handpiece was designed with comfort in mind. The width of the active tip that delivers the radiofrequency energy is just 0.5 inches. Its shape is patterned after the natural curvature of the vaginal walls. Warm ultrasound gel is used during treatment. When the RF energy is delivered patients feel a gentle warming in the vagina, but the sensation is not painful.

How is the ThermiVa procedure performed?

A small s-shaped wand applicator is used to deliver the RF energy both to the interior walls of the vagina and to the external labia and other tissues. When the RF energy converts to heat, the feeling is like a “hot” massage. The procedure takes just 30 minutes. It is non-invasive and there isn’t any downtime. Once delivered, the RF energy immediately begins tightening the interior and exterior tissues.

How soon after childbirth can I get a ThermiVa treatment?

Dr. Ashour recommends waiting for at least six weeks after delivery to have ThermiVa®.

When will I see and feel results, and how long will they last?

pexels andrea piacquadio 3771840The tightening achieved with ThermiVa® is immediate, plus the tissues continue to tighten over the next three to four months as new collagen is produced and firms the tissues. This is the body’s response to the radiofrequency energy applied to the inside and outside of the vagina. It perceives the RF energy, which converts to heat, as a “wound” although there isn’t any actual wound. This response is to remodel existing collagen, providing instant tightening, and then to produce new collagen, which firms the area for months down the road.

ThermiVa® results generally last for about one year, but if you have a “touch-up” session at one year, your results can extend to up to three years.

Are there side effects with ThermiVa?

Radio waves are all around us all the time. They are simply not concentrated as in a ThermiVa® procedure. The only reactions to RF treatments are usually very mild swelling on the treated skin, redness, and some sensitivity, but these issues pass quickly. Some patients may notice an increased urge to urinate for a few days after your session, but that passes and returns to normal. In rare cases, there is a risk of vaginal burns and pain during intercourse following treatment.

Patients do not have any downtime with ThermiVa® and can return to their normal activities immediately.
