Dermal fillers are true to their name. Once injected, they “fill” in the depressed area under a line, crease, or area of volume loss. At ReNu Med Lounge, we provide the entire line of Juvéderm® fillers, in addition to Restylane® Kysse, and Kybella® (although Kybella® isn’t actually a dermal filler).
People group dermal fillers together with Botox® (and Jeuveau®), but they are actually completely different in how they work and the areas of the face they work upon.
Let’s get into our dermal fillers at ReNu Med Lounge in Los Angeles, California.
What is a dermal filler?
When injected, dermal fillers instantly return volume beneath a wrinkle, crease, or sunken area, pushing the skin back upward. Fillers are classified as natural or synthetic based on their makeup. Natural fillers, such as the Juvéderm® line, are made primarily from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that is responsible for hydrating, plumping, and firming the skin. Synthetic fillers are made from manufactured substances. At ReNu Med Lounge, we only offer natural fillers for our patients.
What is the difference between dermal fillers and neuromodulators?
Dermal fillers are injected under a crease or area of volume loss and they fill in the depression and push the skin upward. Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, which binds with nearby water molecules as soon as it is injected.
Dermal fillers only are effective aesthetically on lines, creases, and areas of volume loss on the mid to lower face. These wrinkles are known as “static wrinkles” because they show themselves at all times. Static wrinkles are caused by sun damage, declining collagen production, and other factors that come with aging.
Botox® is a neuromodulator and neuromodulators (we also offer Jeuveau®) work in an entirely different fashion. Neuromodulators are made primarily from the botulinum toxin type A, the same bacteria responsible for botulism. That sounds scary, but it’s not. That’s because in the late 1940s scientists discovered that when injected in very minute amounts the botulinum toxin temporarily stopped muscles from contracting.
Botox® and Jeuveau® work on wrinkles on the upper third of the face. These wrinkles form on the surface of skin above muscles when we perform various common expressions. If you make a frown, for instance, you can feel the muscles around your eyes, between your brows, and on your forehead engage. Over time, as our skin thins and we produce less collagen, wrinkles form on the surface skin when we contract these muscles. These are called “dynamic wrinkles.” These are crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes, the 11s between the eyebrows, and forehead wrinkles.
What dermal fillers does ReNu offer?
At ReNu in Los Angeles, we offer the entire Juvéderm® line and have recently added Restylane® Kysse for adding volume to the lips. We like its long-lasting effects. Here’s our lineup and the areas where each filler is targeted to add volume:
Juvéderm® XC
As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, some people form relatively deep parentheses lines that frame the corners of the mouth and creases that run from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds). You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
Juvéderm® Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips with facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Other women have never been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
Like Ultra, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the lips and areas around the mouth. Ultra Plus is composed of bigger molecules than Ultra, making it thicker and a little longer lasting. Ultra Plus is better for severe wrinkles and folds and for extra lip volume enhancement.
Juvéderm Voluma® XC
Experts call it “age-related mid-face volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time, as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.
Juvéderm Vollure® XC
Juvéderm Vollure® XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers. Vollure® is designed for the correction of moderate to deep creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, and parentheses lines framing the mouth.
Juvéderm Volbella® XC
Juvéderm Volbella® XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape to the lips. Plus, it erases the vertical lines that come from volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella® XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips. It provides a more subtle option when compared with Ultra or Ultra Plus.
Restylane® Kysse
This is the newest addition to the Restylane® line of hyaluronic fillers. The Restylane line closely mimics the Juvéderm® line in its offerings and targeted areas. Kysse is specifically meant for use on the lips. Once injected, Kysse adds fullness to the lips and it helps smooth wrinkles on and above the upper lip (perioral lines).
Kybella®
Kybella® is not a dermal filler, but we’ll include it here. Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid. In the body, deoxycholic acid is responsible for aiding in the breakdown of dietary fat. Kybella® shrinks what is known as submental fullness, otherwise known as a double chin. That’s the genius of Kybella® — deoxycholic acid doesn’t differentiate between fat that you eat or fat that has accumulated under your chin.
When Kybella® is injected into the fat beneath your chin, it breaks down the fat cells, just as it does with ingested fat. Once these fat cells are destroyed, not only does your profile return to a much slimmer, tighter appearance, but the ability to store future fat in the area is diminished because the fat cells are gone. This means that your double chin is gone for good, as long as you don’t put on a bunch of weight down the road.
How long will my result from Juvéderm® fillers last?
How long fillers will last depends in part on your metabolism, as different people break down hyaluronic acid at different rates. These are some general timeframes:
- Juvéderm Voluma® XC is the longest-lasting hyaluronic filler, restoring cheek volume for up to two years.
- Juvéderm® XC, Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Vollure XC, and Volbella XC last between 9-12 months.
How long does Restylane® Kysse last?
Restylane® Kysse provides volume, definition, and color enhancement for up to one year.
How long does Kybella shrink my double chin?
Kybella® provides permanent results. Once the deoxycholic acid attacks and destroys the fat that has accumulated under your chin, it is gone for good. This slims your profile for the duration. As long as you do not gain a large amount of weight the results of your slimmer, tighter profile delivered by Kybella® will last the rest of your life.
Do dermal fillers provide instant results?
Unlike Botox®, which takes about four days to fully take effect, our Juvéderm® fillers provide instant results. As soon as they are injected, the hyaluronic acid instantly binds with nearby water molecules providing volume and erasing the line or crease or adding volume to sunken areas.
Does it hurt to get dermal fillers?
At ReNu Med Lounge in Los Angeles, our highly trained filler injectors provide topical anesthetic prior to your Juvéderm® or Restylane® Kysse injections. This ensures you are comfortable.
